Primer on Grassroots Investment

If you are an investor, are you tired of investing all your money on Wall Street rather than in your community?  If you are a business, have you heard “no” too many times from banks, venture funds, and other investors?  The solution to these challenges is grassroots investment.

We have prepared extensive questions and answers for you to get a good understanding of the evolving field of grassroots investment.  We have organized them into seven different categories of frequently asked questions (FAQs):

  • FAQs About Our Work – Interested in knowing what we are trying to accomplish here on the WNY Regional Food Initiative Site?  What we will and will not do?  How is our work legal?
  • FAQs for Potentially Interested Local Investors – How can you minimize risk and maximize returns?  How can you evaluate companies before you invest in them?
  • FAQs for Businesses Interested in Local Investment – As a food or farming business, why might you want to raise money from local investors?  What are the different tools for doing do?
  • FAQs About Local Investing in General – What exactly does “local” investing mean?  Why is it beneficial for your community?
  • FAQs About Crowdfunding – What’s allowed under federal crowdfunding laws?
  • FAQs About Securities Law – How does crowdfunding fit in the larger universe of regulations on securities (which most investments are)?
  • FAQs About Investing Your Pension Fund Locally – How can you invest your pension savings locally through a self-directed IRA or a solo 401k?
